The Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, ONICCIMA, hereby commends President Muhammadu Buhari on his recent appointment of Chief George Moghalu as the Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority NIWA. Chief Moghalu, an experienced and consummate politician with a rich and diverse background in the public and private sectors is fit for the job currently given to him by the President. We see his appointment as part of the inclusiveness by President Buhari to move the nation forward, for which we thus commend him. We note that the appointment of a substantive Managing Director for NIWA at this point in time is necessary and timely. Given the federal government’s drive to maximize the country’s natural endowments as one of her strategies to grow the nation’s economy, it is in the best interest of the nation for the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to operate with a substantive Managing Director, following the appointment of Senator Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora, as a minister in the current Administration. Not to have filled the vacuum would obviously impede key decision making and execution of vital projects. Onitsha Chamber of Commerce heartily congratulates Chief Moghalu on this well deserved appointment. We urge him to use his new position to ensure that the Inland Waterways Ports in every part of the country, especially the Eastern Ports, are made optimally functional, so that the opportunities offered by this important segment of transportation will be fully harnessed. For instance, the nation’s endowment of a highly productive open sea with abundant and diverse maritime environment offers great opportunities to be harnessed. The nation’s waterways has the capacity to timely move estimated 620 million tons commodity freight annually within the country, and reduce by about 3100, the number of trucks and articulated vehicles from the nation’s already overcrowded highways. In particular, ONICCIMA urges the new NIWA MD, Chief Moghalu to use his new role to vigorously drive the gazette process of Onitsha River Port as a port of final destination and origination. Achieving this will ensure that the South East gets access to the entire world through the Atlantic Ocean, to the benefit of industrialization, trade, commerce and job creation in the zone, there could be no better time than now for this. Similar to this is the concession of the port, on which we strongly urge that the interests of Anambra State and her people be adequately protected. Nevertheless, we wish Chief Moghalu a fruitful stay at NIWA, marked with lofty and grandiose achievements and divine guidance.
